Is Jeff Fisher half as confused by his team as St. Louis Rams fans are? The St. Louis Rams moved to 6-8 on the season with an improbable thrashing of the New Orleans Saints Sunday. The win preserves the chance that the Rams could finish at .500 for the season.
Of course that record could be 8-6 or better if not for some pitiful performances in recent weeks. By the same token, St. Louis could easily be 4-12 or worse if not for their uprisings against playoff contenders.
After Sam Bradford went down in the loss to Carolina, the Rams were 3-4 and facing dim prospects. That's when the roller coaster started.
St. Louis came within and eyelash of knocking off Seattle in Kellen Clemens' season debut. Then they followed that up with a disappointing loss at home to lowly Tennessee.
Naturally that meant the Rams would go to Indianapolis and thrash Andrew Luck and the playoff-bound Colts and come home to convincingly beat the contending Chicago Bears, giving faint hopes to saving the season. Those hopes would be dashed when the Rams laid eggs on the road in San Francisco and Arizona.
So the 5-8 Rams, who made Carson Palmer look like his old Heisman self last week, had the task of stopping Drew Brees and the Saints? No problem. The Rams secondary, who had been lit up like Christmas trees the prior two weeks, intercepted Brees twice in the first quarter and helped stake the Rams to an early 24-0 lead.
The Rams finish out their schedule this week at home against Tampa Bay, followed by a road trip to Seattle. One might expect a win at home against the lowly Bucs followed by being the latest victim of the Seahawks' home win streak.
