It was a hot one at Rams Park Tuesday, with high humidity levels and temperatures hovering around 90 degrees by the time practice started at 3:30 pm CST. The Rams were in full pads, and there was no shortage of contact during team sessions (especially from MLB James Laurinaitis and RB Bennie Cunningham).

As the Rams have a preseason game this Thursday evening, at 7 pm CST versus the Cleveland Browns, it made sense that the second and third teams, as well as special teams, received the majority of reps in Tuesday’s practice session. There was also a mixture of ones vs twos and even one vs threes as the players further on the depth chart got an opportunity to work against the starters, and received extra reps in preparation for Thursday.

Gold Stars from Tuesday’s Camp

RB Bennie Cunningham, WR Brian Quick and LB James Laurinaitis

Cunningham, an undrafted free agent from Middle Tennessee State, was impressive when running with the third team offense, and even vs. the first team defense he stood out with his short area burst and hard-hitting style. Additionally, he showed solid pass protection skills and the ability to track passes from the backfield.

With Zac Stacy a question mark for Thursday’s game, and with starters usually expected to play a quarter or so, Cunningham could see additional reps.

Quick caught pretty much everything thrown his way, sometimes in spectacular fashion:

It appears that he is continuing to gain confidence with each repetition, and is seeing looks on both the first and second team offenses (typically on the outside). St. Louis Rams ESPN reporter Nick Wagoner caught up with legendary Rams WR’s Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt, and both receivers gushed about how Quick is developing:

“Man, he has it all,” Bruce said. “He has speed, he has the physique, he has huge hands. The guy can run and get down the field and he can get out of his break. That’s the biggest thing in this league is being able to transition.”

“Quick had an outstanding day,” Holt said. “I think these last two days have been really good for him.”

Laurinaitis was exceptionally active, even by his high standards. He was crashing downhill toward the line of scrimmage, thudding into ball carriers (Daryl Richardson received the brunt of one lowered shoulder, but Richardson returned the favor to  TJ McDonald later in practice) and made several impressive players in coverage (one in the red zone that was a near interception, and another one broken up deep down the seam).

It is a good sign to see the Rams’ defensive captain set the tone in the last practice before a game.

Other Notes from Tuesday’s Camp

There was something of concern as second year DT Michael Brockers exited the practice field about midway through the session, favoring his right elbow area:

The injury appears to be nothing serious, as he was later seen wearing a compression band and it was not stabilized:

Nevertheless, for a fan base keenly aware of Brockers’ impact in limiting the run and creating havoc in the pocket, it is worth monitoring until the Rams have an official statement on the matter.

TE Lance Kendricks worked intensely on the side with head trainer Reggie Scott, and appears to be well on his way to a return. It is unclear when he will be available, but it is assumed he will see some preseason action.

RB Zac Stacy did not participate in practice, and it is unclear if he will be available for this Thursday’s game.

Former Rams WR Torry “Big Game” Holt spoke for a few minutes after practice with WR’s Tavon Austin and Chris Givens:

RB Daryl Richardson is expected to be the starter for Thursday night, per Coach Jeff Fisher. Richardson provided some fireworks today when he trucked S TJ McDonald during team activities:
